Big dreams to success: How Medicine Hat’s new rural renewal coordinator got here

Jun 9, 2024 | 2:24 AM

A woman who grew up dreaming of being the first female president of her country has landed in Medicine Hat with big ideas for the region.

Tracey Tawiah took a unique path from Ghana to Medicine Hat, where she’s the new rural renewal program coordinator, according to a post from the city.

With big dreams, Tawiah migrated to Canada to pursue higher education in 2018, the post said.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in economics from York University, Tawiah joined the Business Development Bank of Canada as a client support coordinator, supporting businesses and business development leaders in Ontario.

She also acquired an additional local economic development certificate from Toronto Metropolitan University, according to the city.

But while she was working on a master’s degree in economic development and innovation from the University of Waterloo, Tawiah developed a marketing plan for Medicine Hat for an assignment.

She posted the assignment to LinkedIn, gaining the attention of the city’s economic development department.

Soon after, the city says, Tawaih applied for an open economic development officer position and, while she didn’t get hired initially, she made an impression and later found success getting the rural renewal coordinator role.

“My journey from Ghana to Medicine Hat is a testament of my faith in God,” says Tawaih, according to a post from the city.

“I believe God has directed my path throughout all these experiences. I continue to place my faith in Him, as He leads me to higher heights.”

The city said this is an example of what makes this community.

“Tracy embodies the spirit of Medicine Hat: a city that welcomes newcomers, values innovation, and offers a quality of life that is hard to find elsewhere,” the city said.
