Medicine Hat Toxic Elite Cheerleading teams win gold in Mexico

Two Toxic Elite Cheerleading teams from Medicine Hat brought back hardware from a competition in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, last week.

Both the special ability and open teams won their division, following two routines performed over the course of two days.

Team Venom cheerleader Jenelle Forbes boarded the plane with big expectations.

“I was thinking of that gold medal right away, thinking we’re going to do this, we’re going to rock it, we’re going to be so amazing and show the world what we can do,” Forbes said.

It might’ve been that positivity, or maybe the perfect routine scores that gave both the special ability and open teams their gold medals.

“I started having happy tears and crying and hugging my teammates and it was just such an awesome moment,” said Forbes when asked about her reaction to winning.

Being down there for a week, the team also had the opportunity to explore Puerto Vallarta and meet cheerleaders from around the world.

“Everyone there is always just so friendly with each other,” said Isabelle Westland, a cheerleader from the open team.

“It’s such a sportsmanship filled group. Like even just cheerleading as a sport, it’s always so full of just love.”

Cheer coach Dakota Darbyson added: “It’s so cool to see people with the same love and passion come together and everyone’s just cheering each other on. It’s just such a warm feeling.”

It was an experience the founder of Toxic Elite, Debbie Schultz, hopes the athletes remember for the rest of their lives.

“They’re going to be able to tell their grandkids someday that they went to Mexico, they competed with a group of athletes from Medicine Hat, Alberta and they came home champions,” Schultz said.

When asked what she’ll remember most, Forbes said “everything” and that her passion for cheerleading has only deepened since the event.

“I was very excited to get the chance to come and experience such a wonderful competition,” Forbes explained.

Now, cheer season will take a bit of a break and start up again in September.

However, there have already been athletes asking about attending next years Magical Championship of the World again.
