‘It was just really surreal’: McCoy Colts win High School Baseball Championship

“I hope we can go far and hopefully win provincials,” Cunningham told CHAT News in late April.

Last weekend, it became reality.

“When we finally won that game, I think everybody was pretty hyped up. The crowd was hyped up and it was just really surreal feeling for us,” pitcher Nixon Kunkel said.

The Colts were the youngest team out of six competing for the provincial title.

Kunkel pitched the first game on Friday, leading his team to a 11-1 win against Brooks.

Kunkel said he wanted to pitch well in that game to create momentum for his team.

It seemed to work, as the Colts defeated number one seeded Vauxhall in Game 2, which sent them to the finals.

“I don’t think a lot of people expected us to do what we did. But just goes to show if everyone’s pulling in the same direction and you believe in yourselves that awesome things can happen,” said coach Rob McDonnell.

“I think this group has definitely earned the respect of the teams that they’ve played against,” he added.

Cunningham hopes to play with the JV Colts again next season as a Grade 10 student.

“Coach just wants me to be a leader, same with all the other older players like returning this year. We all need it to be leaders and show them how we do it at McCoy,” Cunningham said.

His goal for next year is much like this year.

“Win again. It can just get better,” he said.

Rob McDonnell thanked everyone who helped the McCoy Colts this season, including parents and coaching staff Nathan Chernik, Dan Theofan and Kyle Woolridge.
