Mosquito season is about to arrive in Medicine Hat and area.
CHAT News spoke to the city’s parks manager Dave Genio about what you can do to get rid of them.
Here’s some ways to tackle the pesky insects.
Mosquitos are always looking for places to lay eggs in standing water, no matter whether it’s clean or dirty.
Genio, the parks manager, said Hatters should look out for where they may have standing water outside their home, from the backyard to the eavestroughs.
This can also mean moving out any things you don’t need from your property that could be unnecessarily collecting water.
If there must be standing water outside your home, covering storage bins and buckets with lids will help keep the mosquitoes out and away from breeding there.
From bug spray to long-sleeved clothing, there are many ways to keep mosquitos away from your skin.
While the conditions are starting get ideal for mosquitoes to thrive with warming weather and several rain showers, the city hasn’t noticed a major uptick in mosquito activity yet.
“At this point in time of year, we’ve just been monitoring, we’ll then take a look at certain locations and we might do certain testing,” Genio told CHAT News on Monday.
The parks manager said there hasn’t been any major increase in mosquito activity in Medicine Hat but that status could change as quick as the weather.
“As the week goes along and we see more normal and more warmer temperatures, we might start to see a further increase to activity by the mosquitoes.”
When the hordes of mosquitos do arrive, Genio’s department will use measures that include killing the larvae.
