Medicine Hat Cubs run identification camp to scout local talent

While on ice play might be over, the Medicine Hat Cubs are already looking forward to next season as they ran an identification camp this weekend.

Looking to fill between six and eight roster spots, nearly 30 players showed up to make their presence known, have coaches remember their names and give them a reason why they should wear the Cubs jersey next season.

Cubs head coach and general manager Randy Wong shed some light on what it takes to make the team.

“You gotta be a good teammate, that’s the number one thing. You gotta come in, you gotta blend in and mesh well with the vets. You gotta be a good teammate and you gotta be coachable,” Wong said.

“Obviously we want as high skill level as we can get. We feel like we’ve got enough on our coaching staff to teach you the game, teach you the system, but you have to be a good teammate,” he said.

“I think we found some guys this weekend already who look good and we’re anxious to get going in September.”

Roughly a dozen Cubs players were on hand to run drills and show prospective players the level of hockey being played.

Nolen Sutherland is vying for a spot on the forward line and said that the ‘skill level was an eye opener.

“It’s pretty fast. I didn’t realize that it’s this fast,” Sutherland said.

“I like it. It’s a good program, Randy [Wong] is a good coach, I heard good things about the program. I just want to be here, I want to be a Cub,” he said.

Hayden Gebhart is trying to secure his spot on this season’s blueline.

“It’s pretty fast paced, it’s kind of rough. I like that type of hockey, so I’m having a long of fun out there,” Gebhart said.

“Just the atmosphere, it’s a great group of guys,” he said.

Returning forward Makhi Carriere echoes Wong’s message of the importance of meshing well with the team.

“Last year we were a tight knit group and we won a lot and that’s what we want this year and for every year after that,” Carriere said.

“It’s very important.”
