Applications open for Medicine Hat’s new water-saving incentives

May 7, 2024 | 10:35 AM

Medicine Hat residents who purchase low-flow exterior sprinklers, irrigation system controllers and other water-saving equipment will be eligible for a rebate on their water bill.

That’s made possible through the city’s new 2024 water conservation incentive program that opened applications on Tuesday.

Council approved $150,000 for the program during its Monday public meeting.

The city will accept applications on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those interested can apply on the city’s Water Conservation Incentive page.

Xeriscape materials, drought tolerant ground cover or turf, low flow exterior sprinklers, a WaterSense irrigation system controllers and low-flow toilets are available for rebates.

Jaret Dickie, manager of municipal services business support, said the incentives should reduce stress on the city’s water system ahead of what could be record-breaking drought conditions this year.

“It will hopefully help reduce the stress on our water system,” Dickie told CHAT News following Monday’s council meeting.

He added that staff had previously brought forward a proposal for water-saving rebates in 2016 but that it was declined by council at the time.

The new incentive is an expansion of the HAT Smart initiative that offers help to property owners and builders making environmental and energy-consciuos upgrades when renovating existing residences or constructing new homes.
