Medicine Hat bylaw officers granted loud car enforcement powers

Medicine Hat’s bylaw officers are now able to pull over vehicles that are too loud, the police commission heard on Wednesday.

It’s common to hear cars with modified exhaust systems on city roads, particularly in the spring.

However, there are only so many police officers and many of them are tasked with responding to other crimes.

Bylaw officers, who do not carry firearms and use police cruisers labelled with “municipal enforcement”, proposed getting the proper training to carry out traffic stops and to give tickets out for loud cars.

The proposal got approved, bylaw officers received training and are now on the lookout.

Insp. Brent Secondiak told reporters after the meeting Wednesday he hopes it’s an effective way to address Hatters concerned by the loud noises.

“We know that this is an issue in the community, we’ve seen it many times,” Secondiak said.

“We’re hoping this is effective.”
