Cold front brings sudden weather change (Environment Canada)

Medicine Hat’s weather shifting abruptly, leaving behind double-digit temperatures

After a weekend where people were basking in the sun on their decks or doing yard work, the weather is about to make a sudden shift as it cools off for much of this week.

A cold front will move through southern Alberta Monday afternoon and evening, reaching the U.S. border by nightfall.

The AccuWeather high for Tuesday is 10 C. The rest of the week brings cold temperatures, hitting single digits as low as 2 C by Thursday.

Environment Canada on Monday issued a special weather statement for much of southern Alberta, with snowfall warnings in the national parks in the mountains. That special weather statement has since ended.

This front will usher in a cooler airmass along with rain and snow. Precipitation will start as rain before changing to snow.

The transition from rain to snow will begin in the evening north of the Calgary area, and overnight near Calgary.

Regions closer to the Saskatchewan and U.S. borders will see rain for a longer duration before eventually switching to snow on Tuesday.

With temperatures hovering just above zero degrees Celsius, precipitation type as well as snowfall accumulations will vary greatly.

There remains uncertainty as to how much snowfall will accumulate, though amounts of 5 to 10 cm are possible by Wednesday morning in some locations.

Calm and cooler conditions are forecast on Wednesday, and for the remainder of the week.
