The Medicine Hat Tigers looked like they were going to run away with game one of their Western Hockey League playoff series against the Red Deer Rebels early in the game on Friday night.

Hometown product Tigers defenceman Josh Van Mulligan hammered home a slap shot, fed up to him from Tyler MacKezie to make it 4-0 for the Tigers at 2:04 into the second period

Tigers goals from forwards Oasiz Wiesblatt, Andew Basha and Gavin McKenna had set the tone for the Tigers in the first period.

The Rebels then started to chip away at the Tigers lead with a pair of goals in the second period and another pair in the third period to tie the game up and send it to overtime.

The Tigers had the momentum in the first overtime period outshooting the Rebels 8-2, but couldn’t solve Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke.

In the second overtime a puck directed behind the Tigers net after a faceoff win ended up bouncing out front where the Rebels make no mistake, as Shaunavon, SK product forward Kalan Lind, with his family in the building, buried the overtime winner passed goaltender Ethan McCallum to complete the Rebels come back at the 1:15 mark of the second overtime.

Tickets in the lower bowl of Co-op Place were mostly sold with 4,522 as the listed attendance for the game that lasted 3 hours and 46 minutes.

The Tigers and Rebels are back in action Saturday at Co-op Place at 7 p.m. for game two of the best of seven first round series.

Tickets are available at the Tigers box office, or through tixx.ca.
