Shoppers visiting Medicine Hat Mall may come across structures made out of cans.

A campaign called “Canstruction”, held nationally to support food banks across the country, features teams creating structures out of cans and non-perishable food items.

The building materials are donated to the food bank.

CF Industries, Cape School and Crescent Heights High School each have built a local landmark out of cans and other food items on display at the mall until March 26.

CF Industries completed there display alone, while Methanex donated the food for the schools to use.

Cape School and Crescent Heights High School each built a Sunshine Trolley, while Crescent Heights also canstructed the tee-pee and chess board.

CF Industries canstructed Finley Bridge and also had a Rise Up Ballon Festival component to their display.

Melissa Mullis, executive director at the Root Cellar said they had their judges come in this morning.

“We had the mayor here, we had some people from the chamber. They came in, they marked all the structures,” Mullis said.

“Some trophies have already been given out. I’m not going to give that away yet, but they are also in a competition for the fan favorite,” she added.

“The whole goal here is to collect a lot of food for the Root Cellar. People can come in and there’s a bin at every single structure where they can come in and use their vote by throwing some food in the box [of their favourite].”

Mullis invites everyone out this weekend to see the structures and the work that has been put into these builds and encourages people to bring a food donation to help support the Root Cellar.
