Merle Wyatt from the Southeastern Alberta Purebred Beef Breeders said that bull semen used for artificial insemination is a common practice, but that natural breeding tends to be the preferred method in Southern Alberta.

The cost for beef has gone up, averaging over $3,000 for a full bull, something Wyatt said is due to drought and higher grocery store costs.

“With the drought, it’s really affected things,” Wyatt said.

“Things are down, cow herds are down on numbers, but the market price for all class of livestock is sky high right now so that helps,” he added.

“I think it’s demand because the numbers are lower, there’s less numbers here and in the U.S. That’s what’s created the higher demand because of less numbers.”

Wyatt said that the weather forecast will be favourable to a good crowd, which has grown to nearly pre-pandemic levels.
