‘It’s like Christmas morning’: Golfers play first rounds of the season at Paradise Valley Golf Course

The green might look a bit more brown than usual right now, but that didn’t stop golfers from making the most of the first tee off of the year in Medicine Hat on Friday.

As of 12 p.m., the front nine holes of Paradise Valley Golf Course were open for business.

“I’m very excited to be here today,” golfer Brady Wist said.

“It’s nice to get back outside and start swinging the clubs on an actual outdoor course.”

Golfer Rylan Bender said: “We’re hoping to shoot pretty good. First day of golf, so it’s gonna be fun.”

It’s a holiday for Brent Megistad.

“It’s like Christmas morning, couldn’t sleep last night,” Megistad said.

Megistad and his squad were the very first group to tee off and will make the most of a forecasted sunny weekend ahead.

“After this tea time, [we have] another one at 1:30 and then we’ve got all weekend booked,” Megistad told CHAT News.

Initially, Nicholas Stroh from the pro shop says they were uncertain about opening Friday.

Recent weather gave them the green light, much to the delight of some eager golfers.

“The tee times are fully booked, so I’m assuming it’s going to be really backed up on the course today,” Stroh said.

For some people, this was their first swing of a golf club since last year.

Golfer Robert Clarke had some advice for going in cold-turkey.

“Remember what you did last year, do the same thing, you’ll be okay,” Clarke said.

Others have been maintaining their swing all winter.

“I’ve been playing down at the indoor simulators all winter, playing the golf league down there and it’s just keeping the swing up up to par,” Wist said.

“Still a little nervous though coming out here and trying it out. It’s gonna be a little bit different, but still excited.”

But as the players arrived, each came with a mission, whether that be accomplishing certain goals, or just avoiding setbacks.

“It’ll be competitive today, losers gotta do a forfeit,” Bender said.

Wist joked: “If I can play this round without losing a ball, I’m happy, I’m good with that. I don’t really have any expectations.”

Paradise Valley will be open until the fall as long as the weather cooperates.
