Increased demand for Animal Food Bank brings fundraiser for March

The Animal Food Bank is seeing an increased demand of food requests to feed pets in Medicine Hat.

The monthly food requests in 2024 went up to 66 from the average 30 to 40 they were used to seeing, according to Nicole Frey.

The goal is to prevent pet owners from having to choose whether they eat, or their pet does, and avoid having pets being surrendered to shelters.

A fundraising campaign is underway this month to help accomodate the growing demand.

Frey said the organization will rely on donations through the two Pet Valu locations in Medicine Hat in the Northlands area of Crescent Heights or at the Medicine Hat Mall.

“All money raised in this store stays in the store for us to buy needed pet food and supplies,” Frey said.

“Folks can come on down to either Pet Valu location and donate at the till and then write their name or their pets name or a message on one of the Bunny Bums and it will get hung up in the store,” she added.

“We have a friendly competition going. Farros Pizza has donated pizza to the store that can raise the most donations.”

The campaign runs until the end of March.
