Cypress County passes special tax on dust control

Cypress County council unanimously passed all three readings of a bylaw for a special tax on dust control at its meeting Tuesday.

Five years ago, council determined the tax would go up $25 each year, which is set to continue until 2026 when it will be revisited.

The county puts dust control product down on roads near farmsteads, residences and other developments to minimize dust.

The tax will bring in over $215,000 for the 2024 tax year with the contributions collected for subdivisions set at $300 and farmsteads and other developments set at $450.

Reeve Dan Hamilton said the costs for dust abatement is horrific and it’s something they continue to look at.

“There has been a lot of discussion on product and they are supposed to come back to us in the next little while,” Hamilton said.

“They are putting it all together so there is going to be some good information coming forward. There has been a lot of research done on it,” he added.

“[We will try] to bring those costs down and see what we can do moving forward.”

Hamilton added the county doesn’t collect enough tax to cover the costs and subsidize the difference.
