Wildcats assistant coach Dylan Ireland said the team overcame being the underdogs to win the title.

“We ended up finishing in third place, so we ended up beating out the second place and first place team in the first and second round of the playoffs to win the banner,” Ireland said.

“The hard work and dedication that those girls put into this year definitely paid off, it showed throughout the playoffs.”

The Wildcats won their first game in Medicine Hat 2-1 on Saturday and needed to tie or win in Okotoks to move on.

In game two it wasn’t looking good for the Wildcats, down four goals to none.

But, with just under eight minutes to go in the third period, they scored their first of four goals to rally back to tie the game and win the series.

Scoring the series winning goal for the Wildcats in the final minute was Jovi Ireland.

“It was really nerve racking at the start and then we all decided, oh let’s just start winning,” Jovi said.

“Then we just like got up and worked our hardest until we could all get the goals.”

One of the Medicine Hat Hounds boys teams also brought home a title this weekend winning the U13 tier two blue banner in a series against Brooks.

The Hounds dropped game one to the Bandits on Saturday in Brooks by a score of 3-2.

Medicine Hat needed to win by two to take home the title on home ice on Sunday.

That is exactly what they did with the Hounds winning a 4-2 decision over Brooks.

The Hounds now play a weekend round robin tournament against the three other tier two division winners to see who advances to provincials in Slave Lake later this month.
