‘We don’t have a place to go’: Mustard Seed raises over $10K for the ‘Coldest Night of the Year’

Thousands of people across Alberta, including over 100 in Medicine Hat, are currently homeless.

The Mustard Seed hosted the annually held “Coldest Night of the Year”, a charity walk to raise money for local shelters and bring more awareness to the issue of homelessness.

Vladimir Duque from the Mustard Seed explained what the life of someone who is homeless can look like.

“When we walk in the cold, we have a sense that we don’t have a place to go, that they don’t have a home,” Duque said.

“What is it to walk in the cold? Imagine walking in the cold, imagine there’s snow and when you’re walking, your pants are all wet. You get all stuffy or you’re coughing,” he said.

“That’s the life some people who experience homelessness live. We try to find a solution.”

Over 60 people joined the walk, which allowed for participation in a two kilometer or five kilometer course.

Volunteers and participants explained that the experience is very humbling, something Duque agreed with.

“Seeing the community, the volunteers, that they all care for this cause is very rewarding,” Duque said.

“People want to do something and that’s great,” he said.

“They don’t sit back and they don’t say ‘yeah there’s a problem’, people are doing something.”

“They fundraise for the cause, they help volunteer, so that’s something that’s very rewarding because they have their heart open. They see a problem and do what they can to help.”

The walk raised over $10,000 locally for The Mustard Seed and nearly $150,000 across Alberta.

People wishing to donate can do so by visiting The Mustard Seed’s website.
