A proposal to have a municipal inspection on Cypress County will now be discussed at a meeting in late March.

Coun. Robin Kurpjuweit, who brought forward the proposal, said he will defer it for further conversation.

According to Kurpjuweit information that was set to be presented needs to be addressed and looked into further and also presented more questions for the councillor.

“The language that was used in it was implying that my bringing it forward might have had something to do with personal discontentment with decisions that were being made,” Kurpjuweit said.

“That inspections are intended for serious purposes only, and so it was important that I clarify that I’m very well aware of that,” he added.

“It’s not due to personal discontentment, and that there are some significant concerns that need to be looked into that. That is the whole point.”

Kurpjuweit added the proposal is not something he takes lightly, and accountability in municipal government should be a common practice.

He feels this shouldn’t be perceived as some kind of an aggressive action.

Kurpjeweit believes certain procedures weren’t being followed at the last meeting and wants to see council be better at following process.

When the proposal is next discussed Kurpjuweit said they will be able to have a more robust discussion.

“I did put in two very important information requests, one of them is going to be having a look at the last 10 years worth of legal spending within the county to see, you know what that looks like,” Kurpjuweit said.

“One of the concerns is that an inspection might cost some money. You know, we spend money all the time recognizing that sometimes you need to spend money now to save money later,” he added.

“Management and governance takes wisdom and good decision making.”

Kurpjuweit said he is looking for accountability.

“It’s utilizing the procedures and the bylaws in the way that they’re intended to be used,” Kurpjuweit said.

“As councillor, we need to feel comfortable and safe, that we can operate and work and do our jobs without the fear of repercussions, or you know, people using things like a code of conduct in inappropriate ways,” he added.

“Those are some of the things that need to be looked into and considered to ensure that everybody that’s at that table, there’s nine of us, we all live and we all operate off of the same rules.”
