Cypress County councillor hopeful a municipal inspection will be approved by council

A Cypress County councillor hopes to have a municipal inspection of the county carried out for the purpose of improving transparency.

Coun. Robin Kurpjuweit has given notice he will put the proposal to a vote at the Feb. 21 council meeting.

He said it wasn’t a decision he took lightly, but one that was necessary to have Alberta’s Ministry of Municipal Affairs assess how council is operating to allow them to provide the best governance for their ratepayers.

“It’s not about getting anybody in trouble,” Kurpjuweit told CHAT News on Monday.

“This is about wanting to put our best foot forward,” he added.

“I do think that we have areas where we need to tighten up our belt, and they’re the ones that can come in and speak on that.”

Kurpjuweit is hopeful that council will look at this as a way to learn and find areas they could improve.

He feels that there is a certain level of distrust from the public and a review can help give them transparency.

The councillor did not get into the specifics of what concerned him so much he thought an investigation was necessary.

But he did highlight the county’s bylaws.

“It’s important that we have municipal affairs come down and take a look at specifically things like our procedural bylaws, how we adhere to that,” he said.
