Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Zone 1 take 44 medals at Alberta Winter Games

The 2024 Alberta Winter Games featured several winners from Zone 1.

Zone 1 includes Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Brooks and several other communities across southern Alberta.

Athletes from Zone 1 picked up 14 gold, 17 silver and 13 bronze medals.

In the team sports, the Zone 1 female volleyball team claimed the tournament win.

Chelsia Cooper from Medicine Hat snagged three silver medals in artistic gymnastics for J07 all around, J07 bars and J07 floor. She also won a bronze in J07 vault.

Cooper spoke to CHAT News in January about her journey to the Games.

Zone 1 did not grab any medals in alpine skiing, archery, artistic swimming, badminton, curling, figure skating or hockey.

Cypress County had a trio of athletes pick up medals. Namely, Malakai Kurpjuweit won silver in boys judo and Emereese Kurpjuweit won bronze in girls judo.

Kade Linford, of Walsh, won silver in boys wrestling, plus was part of a bronze medal team.

Wrestling

Zone 1 found success in the wrestling category beyond Linford, as well.

Medicine Hat’s Baraa Alyassine won the male 47-kilogram class. Drayton Clendenan claimed a silver medal in the 51-kilogram category. Ried Ellis-Toddington won in the 34 to 37-kilogram class.

Alyassine, Clendenan, Ellis-Toddington and Sadie Molnar also claimed a bronze as part of the all around team category.

Speed skating

Zone 1 found success in speed skating.

Lethbridge’s Zosia Adelman won a gold medal in the female 400-metre race. Her talent shone through as she picked up a pair of silver medals in the female 1,500 metre and 1,000 metre races.

Ryker Olsen, also of Lethbridge, snagged a silver medal in the male 2,000-metre relay.

Judo

Zone 1, in particular athletes from Lethbridge, dominated the judo category.

Lethbridge’s Brooklyn Seeman won the female under 44 kilogram category.

Redcliff’s Jack Mcalpine won the male over 50-kilogram and up class.

Lethbridge men won in four weight classes. Tamura Grayson won male under 40 kilogram, Connor Gallant won the 55 kilogram class, Drake Gregory the 66 kilogram and Munkhu Batbayar won the male over 81 kilogram class.
