Southern Alberta Hockey Academy U18 Women’s team graduates 12 girls in their final home game

Feb 20, 2024 | 5:19 PM

Twelve ladies from the Southern Alberta Hockey Academy’s U18 Women’s team had their last home game of their careers on Sunday.

Most of the graduating players are being recruited across Canada, with the exception of two taking their talents to the United States.

Emeryn Baugh is one of the departing athletes.

Baugh said that the home game is the last one of her hockey career but with the PWHL and the Medicine Hat Rattlers beginning their inaugural seasons, women’s hockey is just getting started.

“You look at the male side of things and they all kind of look up to NHL players,” Baugh said.

“Now this is just an opportunity for women to look, have someone to look up to and find a favourite team, a favourite player, it’s very exciting,” she said.

“They’re making headway and really paving the road for female athletes.”

Head coach Evan Vossen said that witnessing the girls taking their talents to the next level has been exciting and rewarding.

“I just think that it’s pretty special for some of these girls,” Vossen said.

“We have some that have been with us for three years and one that’s been with us since we started four years ago, so it’s seeing where they’ve come from, their growth and development and how they’ve kind of helped get our program where it is is pretty cool.”

SAHA captain Riley Gramlich is also leaving the program after three years and said there weren’t many dry eyes in the locker room after the game.

“The bond we got in that locker room is pretty special,” Gramlich said.

“It’s a great group of girls to work with and I’m so proud of how far we’ve come this year.”

SAHA beat the Northern Alberta Xtreme 2-1 and now head to Winnipeg this weekend to start their playoff run.
