Grande Prairie welcomes athletes for the Alberta Winter Games this weekend

The 2024 edition of the Alberta Winter Games kicks off Friday evening in Grande Prairie with opening ceremonies taking place at the Bonnetts Energy Centre.

The city is expecting over 2,500 youth athletes, coaches, officials, and family spectators from across the province to take in the amenities the region has to offer, over the Family Day long weekend.

The games competition starts Saturday morning, and finishes up on Monday morning before the closing ceremonies (not open to the public) at the Grande Prairie Composite High School in the afternoon.

Awards handed out at the closing ceremonies include:

  • Minister’s Cup for the Zone showing the greatest improvement from one Alberta Games to the next,
  • Alberta Cup for the Zone that achieves the most medal points for sports in the Games,
  • Spirit of Sport Award for the Zone that best demonstrates the spirit of fair play. sportsmanship, team spirit, and cooperation on and off the field.

Eighteen different sports will compete this weekend.

Multiple facilities in and around Grande Prairie will be occupied by AWG events over the weekend as well, those are:

  • Eastlink Centre (Artistic Swimming, Judo)
  • Bonnetts Energy Centre (Wrestling, Figure Skating)
  • Crosslink County Sportsplex (Men’s & Women’s Hockey)
  • Grande Prairie Activity & Reception Centre (Archery)
  • St. John Paul II Catholic School (Badminton)
  • Wapiti Nordic Centre (Biathlon, Cross Country Skiing)
  • Grande Prairie Curling Centre (Curling)
  • Grande Prairie Gymnastics Centre (Artistic Gymnastics)
  • Dave Barr Community Arena (Women’s Hockey)
  • Charles Spencer High School (Fencing)
  • Design Works Centre (Ringette, Speed Skating)
  • Nitehawk Adventure Park (Alpine Skiing, Freestyle Skiing, Snowboarding)
  • Northwestern Polytechnic (Volleyball)
