Alberta is launching a free digital literacy programs to help residents stay in touch with the ever-changing world around them.

The online program offers 19 courses from beginner to intermediate, with practical lessons focusing on foundational and safety skills that every internet user should have, the province says.

‘It is designed for Albertans with little to no experience using computers, and each one can be completed in under 30 minutes.

  • Beginner is designed for individuals with little to no experience using a computer. It has 10 modules that outline basic concepts like using the internet, setting up an email address and sharing information online.
  • Intermediate is designed for individuals who want to grow their existing digital literacy. It has nine modules that outline more complex concepts like understanding digital footprints, staying safe online and learning or shopping online.

“In a digital world, it is increasingly critical for seniors and all Albertans to know how to use all of the online tools they need to access benefits, make purchases and talk to their families,” says Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services.

The program is funded by the Government of Canada’s Skills for Success Program, a release notes.

“Improving digital skills will remove barriers for Canadians in the workplace and in their daily lives. The Government of Canada, in partnership with the Province of Alberta, is using the Skills for Success initiative to invest in the Digital Literacy Program,” says Randy Boissonnault, federal Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Official Languages.

“This initiative will provide access to training to use digital devices and browse the internet safely. Learning these skills, which are now essential to daily life, will surely improve the quality of life for Albertans.”

The programs are also available in French.
