Medicine Hat‘s two MLAs are hosting a public town hall Friday at the library.

The event will feature Premier Danielle Smith, MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat and Alberta premier, and Justin Wright, MLA for Cypress-Medicine Hat.

The town hall runs from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Medicine Hat Public Library‘s theatre on a first come, first seated basis. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.

Chief Librarian Ken Feser said Monday the meeting is an important chance for residents to hear from their provincial representatives.

“These events give library patrons and the community the chance to hear their elected officials speak to the issues that are important to the citizens of Medicine Hat and the region,” Feser said in a statement.

A capacity crowd of more than 150 people filled the library theatre for the last MLA town hall on Oct. 18, 2023.

The upcoming town hall will follow the same format, with questions to be submitted in advance through an online form. The form will close on Thursday at 9 a.m.

The town hall comes nearly 10 months after Smith and her United Conservative government swept to power in Alberta.

That government is working on several major policy initiatives in 2024, including a restructuring of the health care system and an exploratory effort that could result in Alberta leaving the federal pension program.

In 2023, Smith was elected with 66.5 per cent of the 20,025 who voted in Medicine Hat. Wright received 61.9 per cent of ballots of the 21,794 who voted in his riding.
