Medicine Hat, AB–About 150 people attended a town hall meeting at the Medicine Hat Public Library Wednesday evening to hear from Premier and Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Danielle Smith as well as Cypress Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright.

Smith and Wright touched on a number of issues during the discussion included the proposed Alberta Pension Plan, economic development, twinning of Highway 3 and utility rates.

Premier Smith also addressed provincewide consultations that are underway to determine if Albertans should quit the Canada Pension Plan and create an Alberta Pension Plan instead.

A third-party report released last month suggests Alberta should get $334-billion or 53 percent of the CPP.

Smith and Wright also provided an update on the status of the twinning of Highway 3.

Smith also touched on the issue of gender and sexual orientation. Saskatchewan has introduced a bill for children under 16 requiring schools to get parental consent to use a child’s gender-related preferred name or identity. Under the bill, if a child feels they may suffer physical, emotional or mental harm from the school seeking consent, a plan needs to be developed with support staff to inform the parent. Smith says at the moment the UCP has no plans to introduce legislation.
