On Friday, sledge hockey players will converge at the Big Marble Go Centre to compete in the Larry Godin Classic Tournament.

The event showcases the participation of the Hounds from Medicine Hat Adaptive Sports and the Calgary Sledge Hockey Association, featuring both adult and youth teams.

Among the competitors is ten-year-old Reid Hintz from Bow Island, eagerly anticipating the tournament.

“There’s not a lot of games I can play,” Reid told CHAT News.

According to Reid’s mom Rebecca Hintz, Reid’s physical ability doesn’t affect him on the ice. It’s a place where he can compete equally with his brothers and showcase his competitive nature.

Sledge hockey means so much to the Hintz family, they drive in from Bow Island for every practice, game and tournament.

“That’s how important this league is that we’ve got families from outside of town that come in to be a part of this,” Rebecca explained.

Volunteer Kayley Schnare noted a growing interest in the Medicine Hat Hounds community, with more families, like Reid’s, becoming involved.

This weekend’s tournament will see five teams from Medicine Hat, marking the highest participation they’ve ever had.

“I just love the community at Medicine Hat Adoptive Sport and Recreation; it’s such a good group of people,” Schnare expressed.

Schnare hopes for strong support from spectators this weekend as hometown athletes compete against Calgary teams.

Meanwhile, Reid simply wishes for more people toenjoy the sport that he loves.

“It’s very fun and cool to watch,” said Reid.

The tournament kicks off on Friday and continues through Sunday.
