City of Medicine Hat says community rinks will open soon, puts out call for adopt-a-rink volunteers

Hatters will soon be able to lace up their skates and glide onto a rink near them.

That’s according to the City of Medicine Hat‘s parks manager Dave Genio, who said he expects the city’s 15 community rinks to open within the next week or two.

The rinks opening also depend on volunteers stepping forward to help out through the city’s adopt-a-rink program.

The program aims to grow community and provide more options for outdoor activities during the cold winter months.

While volunteers are responsible for getting the rink up and keep it going through the season, the city is there to help when needed, Genio said.

“They’d be responsible for building the ice, maintaining it…through shovelling or through flooding the ice surface,” Genio told CHAT News.

“We supply shovels and hoses and that sort of stuff as well as the training. And then in some situation where we get a high snow volume or they’re just need a little bit extra help and support, then the parks and recreation team comes out and helps.”
