Future consultations on Alberta leaving CPP on hold

Dec 8, 2023 | 5:23 PM

EDMONTON – An Alberta government panel gathering feedback on whether the province should quit the Canada Pension Plan is putting future public consultations on hold.

Engagement panel chair Jim Dinning says discussions will be more useful once Canada’s chief actuary weighs in on how much Alberta should get if it leaves the C-P-P

Dinning’s panel has held five telephone town hall meetings with Albertans and has promised in-person town halls this month.

But he says Albertans want more certainty around how much Alberta would get if it was on its own.

A province-commissioned report estimates Alberta would get more than half the C-P-P fund.

But economists expect it would be more like 15 per cent, in line with the number of Albertans in the C-P-P.

Dinning says the panel has heard from thousands of Albertans and about half are saying they want to stay in the C-P-P.
