Parts of southern and central Alberta under snowfall warnings

Dec 7, 2023 | 9:51 AM

A snowfall warning is in effect for the Airdrie-Cochrane-Olds-Sundre areas.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), snowfall with total amounts of 10 to 20 cm is expected.

Snow, heavy at times, is expected to continue through Thursday. Precipitation is also anticipated to begin as rain or rain mixed with snow over lower elevations, before transitioning to snow. ECCC says higher amounts are possible in some locations, though Calgary itself is expected to receive near 10 cm.

Meteorologists say the snow will taper off Thursday evening. However, visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. There may also be a significant impact on rush hour traffic in urban areas.

Officials say, be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. If visibility is reduced while driving, you’re reminded to slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Elsewhere, Banff National Park is also under a Snowfall Warning, as is the city of Calgary, Rocky Mountain House-Caroline, and Nordegg areas, among others.
