Skateboard Association strives to end period poverty one donation at a time

Nov 23, 2023 | 3:46 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Skateboard association has launched their End Period Poverty Campaign, with the goal of collecting feminine hygiene products for the Root Cellar.

Originally, the skateboarders were collecting those products for their upcoming humanitarian trip to Mexico. They quickly realized those items are needed here at home too.

“One of the statistics that I’ve read is 25 percent of women in Canada have at some point in their life not been able to afford feminine products for either themselves or their children,” says Jade Ritchie, a director with the Skateboard Association.

Ritchie says the association has already brought in boxes of products themselves. Now, they are turning towards the community of Medicine Hat for help.

“When we had spoke to Melissa at the Root Cellar, she was telling us about how it’s often times you’re deciding whether you should buy bread or a box of tampons or pads,” explains Ritchie.

Davie James, secretary at the Skateboard Association is also helping with the initiative. He says this campaign has been a learning experience for everyone.

“The more of these types of campaigns that we turn on, they’re always educational to us. I think a lot of times you can live with your eyes kind of closed to a lot of this stuff,” says James. “This is a demand we can’t ignore now.”
