Commons ag committee wants major grocers to put food cost reduction plans in writing
OTTAWA – The heads of Canada’s major grocery chain are being called back to Parliament to testify about their plans to stabilize food prices.
This comes after the House of Commons agriculture committee passed an N-D-P motion last Thursday to invite the grocery executives or summon them if necessary.
Earlier this fall, Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said Loblaw, Metro, Empire, Walmart and Costco had presented their plans for tackling rising grocery prices to the government.
While the plans included offering discounts, prize freezes and price-matching campaigns, most grocers have yet to confirm details of their plans.
