Here in Medicine Hat, the moon will cover about 60% of the sun at maximum. Some parts of the world will witness a “ring of fire” where the moon lines up perfectly inside the sun. An event like this happens about every 18 months.

Lukas Gornisiewicz is an eclipse chaser and photographer. He stresses that the eclipse should not be viewed with the naked eye. Eclipse glasses or a number 14 welding shade are important to avoid eye damage.

Gornisiewicz will be out at Elkwater Lake Saturday morning, handing out eclipse glasses.

“I started photographing year 2000 of a solar eclipse and I got that published in a magazine in Sky News magazine when I was 16, so that just kind of heightened my hobby. I’ve been to ten total solar eclipses in nine countries,” explains Gornisiewics. “It’s just a great event and it’s really great to educate people and get people outside and and see it see the wonders of the world.”

A total solar eclipse can be seen in eastern Canada this April. The next time a total solar eclipse can be seen from Medicine Hat is in 2044.
