National day for Truth and Reconciliation, event at Medicine Hat College

Sep 29, 2023 | 3:36 PM

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Tomorrow is September 30th, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This day honours residential school survivors and children that didn’t come home from them.

“It gives us a day to mourn, to reflect, to start and continue our healing. And to come together to do that, because the connection is really important,” says Nicki Easly, the Indigenous student specialist at Medicine Hat College.

The event starts at 2pm, where they will start with prayers and introductions. Then there will be a walk of remembrance, a blanket ceremony for residential school survivors and honouring songs and dance.

Eastly says this event is for everyone and an opportunity for education on residential schools and their inter-generational impact. She explains how non-Indigenous people can show respect and honour this day.

“Being able to talk about what happened and having people be open to that discussion, because it is a difficult one,” says Eastly.

She adds, “having people be willing to become allies, willing to say, ‘okay, you know what, I’m going to do my part in making sure that we have safe spaces for Indigenous people and community to come together to learn.’”

The event will take place outside of the S-wing at the Medicine Hat College campus.
