Travelling with Dan: The World’s Biggest Beaver

Welcome to Travelling with Dan. Hitting the road to explore sites on and off the beaten path is a passion of mine and I’d like to share some of my experiences with you.

I recently travelled the 1,028 kilometres northwest to Beaverlodge, Alta., home of The World’s Biggest Beaver! Beaverlodge celebrated its 75th anniversary of incorporation on July 21, 2004, and part of the celebration included the unveiling of a giant beaver sculpture.

The beaver weighs 1,500 lbs and is 18-feet long (5.48 metres), 10 feet (3 metres) wide and 10 feet (3 metres) high. The log weighs 1,500 lbs and is 5 feet (1.52 metres) high, 20 feet (6.09 metres) long.

It’s a beautiful large roadside attraction, and 30 minutes down the highway, in Grande Prairie is another one.

The Millennium Sundial is a huge 40-foot (12 metre) tall metallic sundial, a public art project erected for the year 2000 celebration.

It’s not the biggest one in Alberta, bested by the one in Lloydmister which stands 60-feet (18 metres) tall.
