Alberta NDP leader calls for public inquiry into E. coli outbreak

Sep 12, 2023 | 4:10 PM

CALGARY – Alberta’s Opposition leader says the province has to explain why it stopped investigating a commercial kitchen now at the centre of a massive E. coli crisis.

Rachel Notley says records show the kitchen had been cited for repeated health violations but there was no followup done for months prior to last week’s outbreak.

She is calling for a full and public inquiry.

There have been 264 lab-confirmed cases of the bacterial infection since the outbreak at 11 Calgary daycares was declared a week ago.

After the kitchen was shut down, an inspection found serious health violations, including cockroaches, a sewer smell, and insufficient concentrations of fluid for sanitizing equipment and utensils.

Dr. Mark Joffe, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, says authorities are still trying to determine what caused the outbreak, but it appears to have come from the kitchen.
