Saskatchewan will move to protect ‘parental rights’ in fall: Moe

Sep 8, 2023 | 5:55 PM

REGINA – Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says he plans to introduce legislation this fall aimed at protecting “parental rights.”

Moe says the province is not backing down from a policy that requires parental consent when children under 16 want to change their names or pronouns at school.

UR Pride, a local LGBTQ organization in Regina, is taking the province to court over the policy, saying it violates Charter rights.

The organization says the policy could out children to their parents or result in teachers’ misgendering them at school.

The Saskatchewan Party government has also made changes to sexual education rules.

The province has banned third-party organizations from teaching sexual education, and parents can opt to remove their children from participating.

Action-4-Canada, a national Christian group, says it influenced the province in adopting the policies, which the government denies.

The Saskatchewan legislative session is scheduled to resume Oct. 25.
