Community Spirit winners announced

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Thirteen Medicine Hat residents will be recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community on Oct. 18.

The City of Medicine Hat presents the Community Spirit Awards every two years. They are presented to individuals and groups whom enhance the quality of life in our city through their dedication, activities, and accomplishments in the areas of arts/culture, sports/recreation, environment, volunteerism, community inclusion, community service and civic pride.

β€œThe Community Spirit Awards symbolizes the heartbeat of Medicine Hat, honouring the unsung heroes who tirelessly work behind the scenes, elevating our collective spirit,” said Allison Knodel, Councillor for Civic Functions.

This year, the 2023 Community Spirit Award recipients are:

Awards of Service:
Arts/Culture: Robert Pape
Civic Pride: Willy and Cindy Taillon
Community Inclusion: Kristen Sept
Compassion: Kym Porter, George Kovalev
Sports/Recreation: James and Coreen Sheardown
Volunteerism: Brenda Taylor, Kendra Albrecht, Terry Noble

Awards of Excellence:
Heart of Medicine Hat: Donna Serr
Change Maker: Karen Saffran

An awards selection committee, made up of representatives from the Community Vibrancy Board, recommends recipients to City Council from the nominations received.

The awards will be presented Wednesday, Oct. 18, at the Esplanade Arts and Heritage Centre.
