Redcliff Legion hopeful about future, with continued community support

REDCLIFF, AB – The Redcliff Legion and its future have been unknown for the past year. The legion took a financial hit last year after 64 thousand dollars were misappropriated almost forcing them to shut down. Now, a member says he is more optimistic for the organization’s future, but not without help from the community.

“We’re still not completely out of the deep waters, we’re gradually coming back up. But it’s going to be a long, hard struggle and we’re still going to need continuous support from the community,” says Barry Cole, vice president of the Redcliff Legion.

He says holding fundraisers has been essential in the past few months to keep their doors open. One of those events was cornfest held this weekend. South Country CO-OP, Hubers corn and Reg’s Meat all pitched in to support the fundraiser. The legion is still planning future events, such as the family dance held the last Sunday of every month starting in September.

However, Cole says fundraisers like this wouldn’t run without the help from volunteers and members, one thing the legion is in dire need of. Cole served 22 years in the military and says its important to show support to veterans and current soldiers.

“When you see the faces of the people that gave their lives, and I know people that lost their lives so that’s why I joined the legion, and that’s why others should join the Legion,” says Cole.
