Hurricane in California will challenge B.C. firefighters

Aug 21, 2023 | 11:18 AM

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government is doing everything it can to keep people safe as fires in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories rage on.

Speaking in Prince Edward Island today, Trudeau described the “images of apocalyptic devastation” emerging from the affected areas, calling it a heartbreaking and scary time for people.

Trudeau is in Charlottetown for a three-day cabinet retreat for Liberal MPs.

He says the cabinet’s incident response group will meet again this afternoon to discuss ongoing co-ordination of the fire situation.

Meanwhile, a hurricane in Southern California is expected to impact weather across British Columbia.

The BC Wildfire Service warns that Hurricane Hilary is expected to bring 20-kilometre-per-hour winds moving east across the province, with gusts up to 40 kilometres per hour.

Officials say that will bring more challenges for firefighters already battling hundreds of fires.
