LETHBRIDGE, AB – The provincial government is investing $20 million over five years towards the new Innovation Catalyst Grant.

The grant is set up to support graduates of Alberta’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) PhD and Master’s programs by helping them start up their own company.

The program awards up to $250,000 over two years to successful applicants, and connects them to technical mentorships, and access to labs at universities across Alberta.

Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation, said, “Our investment in this program will create jobs, attract investment and strengthen Alberta’s tech and innovation ecosystem.”

The grant is administered by the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge, and has annual intakes in 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.

Dena McMartin, vice-president of Research at the University of Lethbridge said, “This government investment in recent graduates of master’s and doctoral programs in STEM fields speaks to the value of supporting our aspiring entrepreneurs, whose talents and ideas are building the province’s economy now and paving the way for an exciting future.”

The program is currently accepting applications, and the deadline to apply is Sept. 15. More on how to apply, including eligibility criteria, is available at the Government of Alberta website.
