‘A good time to be hot’: Mavericks win playoff opener

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks struck first in their first-round playoff series, routing the Regina Red Sox 11-3 on Monday at Athletic Park to go up 1-0 in the series.

The Mavericks ended the regular season second in the East Division of the Western Canadian Baseball League. What ended as a successful regular season started a bit rocky but the team has a new sense of confidence now.

“It’s been a bit of a roller-coaster. We started off the year, you know, not the greatest team, but, you know, just after we got to know each other a little bit more, it made a big difference,” says Johnny Vulcano, who hit an inside-the-park homerun on Monday. “Like halfway through the season, after the all-star break, we kind of, we started playing a little better and I think now we’re one of the hottest teams in the league. So, yeah, it’s definitely a good time to be hot.”

The infielder is new to the Mavericks this year, but returning player Zach Stark felt the same way. Stark says trusting the process is what changed their luck.

“A lot of hard work, guys putting in extra work, you know, before games and after games. Guys just kind of staying disciplined and trusting, you know, themselves and the team, knowing that eventually stuff will turn around,” says the catcher.

The Regina Red Sox were seeded third going into playoffs. But no matter how their opponent is ranked, the Mavs won’t change their plan of attack through playoffs.

“Just play the way we play every other team. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing the worst team in the league, the best team in the league. It’s the same mentality that we’re going to win that game, so.”

“The way I look at it is there’s only really one way to play the game and that’s the hardest you got,” says Vulcano.

It’s not difficult to succeed when hundreds of fans are cheering every crack of the bat, something outfielder Brody Gardner picked up on quickly.

“Loud and it’s, it’s just electric,” he says. “Like when a run scores, you hear the cowbells, everybody’s on their feet, it’s just fun to hear, fun to be around.”

With a .352 average good for sixth in the league, that encouragement must be working.

Inching closer to a championship title, Stark reflects on what winning a title would mean to him.

“It would be something pretty special. My brother was on the team in 2018, and he won that year. And seeing them win that and be… kind of being able to be a part of that was pretty cool. So now if I get my own ring, that’d be pretty cool, too.”

To get to that ring the Mavericks will need to start by winning the three-game series against Regina.

The Mavs are in Regina tonight looking for a series sweep. Game 3, if necessary, is Wednesday at Athletic Park.
