Local caregivers meet to tackle challenges together

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A Medicine Hat caregivers support and empowerment organization held a community discussion this afternoon at the Veiner Centre. The event was put together by The Caregiver’s Lighthouse and the Canadian Mental Health Association.

The aim was to shed light on the hardships family caregivers and service providers face daily. With hopes of bridging the gaps between services and needs.

Lorna Scott, coordinator for The Caregiver’s Lighthouse says they haven’t been able to hold these meetings for the last three years due to the pandemic.

“We are gathering the people together to find out what are the needs right now for family caregivers and for the service providers to be able to share with us what they can do and how they can help.”

For Lorna, the opportunity to have these discussions is all about trying to create community connections. But the organization does face challenges in its pursuit to support caregivers.

“We have a limited amount of funding and I want to make sure that we do the right things for them. So this is the opportunity for me to plan events or resources for them that are gonna be most meaningful and most helpful for them right now.”

Lorna had an interesting perspective on the challenges that caregivers face daily.

“If you put a frog in boiling hot water it will jump out. But if you put it in cold water and slowly warm it up, it just assimilates and eventually you have a boiled frog.” Lorna added by saying, “That is what I’m seeing for caregivers. They don’t see how the stress has impacted them until they become patients themself,” says Scott.

Lorna says the next step will be securing funding from a variety of places for resources to assist caregivers.
