Struggling Edmonton Elks promote Jarious Jackson to offensive coordinator

Jul 31, 2023 | 10:16 AM

EDMONTON — The struggling Edmonton Elks reassigned assistant coach Stephen McAdoo on Monday and promoted pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Jarious Jackson to offensive coordinator.

The moves came two days after the winless CFL club dropped its eighth straight game of the season.

The latest loss, a 27-0 decision to the B.C. Lions, gave the Elks sole possession of the longest streak of home defeats in North American professional sports history.

Edmonton has lost 21 times in a row at Commonwealth Stadium.

The futility stretch dates back to Oct. 12, 2019. Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Browns set the previous mark of 20 straight losses in 1953 before becoming the Baltimore Orioles the following season.

Jackson will handle offensive game planning and play-calling duties effective immediately, the Elks said. McAdoo, who was named offensive coordinator in January 2022, will remain on staff in an advisory role.

“It’s never easy to make a significant change to your coaching staff during the season, but our results haven’t been up to our standards,” Elks general manager and head coach Chris Jones said in a release. “Jarious has proven in his career that he’s up to the task of leading an offence to success, and I expect that to be the case given his abilities and familiarity with our team.

“We’ve got 10 games to make significant strides as a team this season, and Jarious is going to be a key part of that process.”

Jackson previously served as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with the Toronto Argonauts in 2021 and B.C. Lions in 2018 and 2019.

He began his coaching career as the Lions quarterbacks coach in 2013 and later served on Jones’s staffs in Edmonton (2014-15) and Saskatchewan (2016-17).

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity of being an offensive coordinator again in the CFL,” said Jackson. “It’s a privilege to coach in this league and with this club, so the importance of this role isn’t lost on me.”

“We have a lot of work to do to improve our offensive output and meet the high expectations we have as a group. That work begins now, as we’ll make the most of the bye week and get prepared for a tough Winnipeg team on Aug. 10.”

Jones and Jackson were scheduled to attend a news conference later Monday.

Edmonton has a 4-22 record since Jones was named GM and head coach of the Elks in December 2021.

Jackson, a native of Tupelo, Miss., won the Grey Cup three times as a quarterback. He won championships with the Lions in 2006 and 2011 and added another with the Argonauts in 2012.
