City bumping up its weed control efforts
MEDICINE HAT, AB – The City of Medicine Hat says it is working diligently to whack the weeds that have become an eyesore on its sidewalks, curbs and medians.
The city says parks and recreation has dedicated crews working on main routes like Dunmore Road will progressively move to other less-used roads and streets. Extra crews from municipal works and contractors are also being deployed to apply herbicides as weather permits.
The worst of the areas have been identified and crews aim to clear them by Aug. 4.
The city says a contractor will start a clean-up process for “shoot” and “sucker” weeds at the Gershaw Drive and Trans Canada Interchange area. It’s expected to be finished between Aug. 4-11. The space has been undergoing a naturalization process due to its potential redesign in the future, and the associated lack of irrigation has allowed weeds to grow and spread. The city adds it will take time for natural grasses to establish there and is committed to managing the site’s appearance during that time.
