MEDICINE HAT, AB – Three members of the Medicine Hat Police Service will be heading to Winnipeg later this week to partake in the 2023 World Police and Fire Games.

Constables Lisa Gervais, Mitchell Young and Garreth MacPherson will be representing Canada, and Medicine Hat, at the games, where thousands of police officers and firefighters from around the world will be competing.

Gervais is participating in her second World Police and Fire Games, being the sole MHPS officer at last year’s games in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Gervais is participating in the CrossFit event, the same event she did in Rotterdam. She says that she is looking forward to being back at the games, and is aiming for the podium.

“Obviously I would like to podium, I have put a lot of work into my training this year, I worked on my weaknesses that I had last year, I spent a whole year training with a trainer and I just look forward to hopefully getting on podium again,” Gervais said on Tuesday.

Young will be participating in his first Police and Fire Games. He will be competing in the Toughest Competitor Alive competition, which will see participants ensure eight tests of overall fitness. Young says that the opportunity to represent Medicine Hat and Canada is one of great excitement.

“It’s a pretty cool feeling. The fact that it’s in Canada this year is also very cool to me and representing MHPS and hopefully inspiring more people to join in for next year or two years,” Young stated on Tuesday.

Third is MacPherson, who was unavailable to talk to on Tuesday. He, like Gervais, will be participating in the CrossFit event in Winnipeg. Like Young, MacPherson will also be making his first appearance at the games. In a statement released by MHPS on Monday, they say that he is excited to meeting fellow competitors from within Canada and from other countries.

The games open on July 28 and continue through to August 6. The 2025 World Police and Fire Games will be held in the United States in Birmingham, Alabama.
