Record tied in Medicine Hat area

Heat records broken in Alberta on Monday; tornado west of Edmonton

A number of hot weather records were broken Monday, the hottest day so far this year.

There was also a confirmed tornado near Wildwood, Alta. about 120 kilometres west of Edmonton, at about 9:30 p.m. yesterday.

There have been no reports of damage specific to the tornado at this time.

A second tornado may have occurred earlier in the evening.

At about 6:05 p.m. a funnel cloud was reported near Cynthia, Alta. associated with a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. Cynthia is about 165 km west of Edmonton and 50 km south of Wildwood.

Meteorologists are seeking pictures of the tornadoes and any damage they may have caused.

Heat over southern Alberta created a number of new temperature records.

The following areas set or tied a daily maximum temperature record yesterday.

Medicine Hat area

  • tied record of 38.9 C set in 1890

Calgary area

  • new record of 35.1 C; old record of 33.9 C set in 1890

Drumheller area

  • new record of 36.9 C; old record of 35.0 C set in 1936

Lethbridge area

  • new record of 36.9 C; old record of 34.4 C set in 1904

Pincher Creek area

  • new record of 35.6 C; old record of 32.8 C set in 1905

Taber area

  • new record of 37.7 C; old record of 34.5 C set in 2007

Waterton Park area

  • new record of 34.3 C; old record of 31.0 C set in 1988
