Hatters prepare for a blazing hot weekend

MEDICINE HAT, AB – With southern Alberta heating up, Environment and Climate Change Canada have released a heat warning for Medicine Hat, Bow Island and Suffield.

Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says temperatures will be in the mid- to high-30 C range by Monday.

“It’s that cumulative effect of the heat over a number of days that really affects people. So that’s why we tell people to really take it easy in the heat. I know its summer time and we all want to get out there, enjoy it, and have been waiting for it. But overdoing it in the heat can lead to a lot of danger.”

Those who want to have a little fun in the sun are asked to be cautious and plan appropriately for the weather.

“Keep hydrated, seek shade, and seek cold air conditioning places if you can if you don’t have air conditioning,” she says.

“There’s higher humidity in the air and the body has trouble, a lot of trouble sweating, and that’s such an important mechanism. So that’s why we keep saying to drink as much water as you can.”

Medicine Hat has spots like the public library, the mall, and the Big Marble Go Centre, with air conditioning available and open to the public.

CHAT News spoke to some people regarding the rising temperatures in the city at Strathcona Island Park. Many Hatters are preparing for the heat.

“Lots of water as you see, drinking lots of water, lakes anything like that. Sunscreen, finding as much shade as possible and basically going out in the mornings.”

For others, the heat has brought some mixed reviews.

“It’s too much. I think 25 degrees is that sweet spot, and this is just like the sun is trying to kill us.”

No matter how hot it gets this summer, there are ways to beat the heat in Medicine Hat.
