Volunteers needed for missing children’s booth at Stampede

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A program that connects missing children with their parents or guardians is looking for volunteers during next week’s Medicine Hat Stampede.

The Medicine Hat Safe Community Association is looking for several volunteers to man the Kid Find booth.

Volunteers are needed to help register children into the kid find program database. They will also take photos of children wearing their current attire, so they are easy to locate.

In the event of a missing child, volunteers will access information in the database to begin the reconnection process.

Safe Community Association chair Chantel Manning says the information they gather helps cut search times down exponentially.

“This goes into our database where we tag it with a corresponding wristband that is also given to guardian and child,” says Manning.

The Kid Find booth is a collaborative effort with local search and rescue crews as well as the Medicine Hat Police Service.

Manning says even under the most watchful eye, children have a possibility of going missing in large crowds.

“I’ve had to work with parents that have had those unfortunate events happen and there’s a breakdown right? Like you don’t know, your mind is going to go to the worst place possible and especially with Stampede, there’s so much going on, so many different rides that it takes a mere moment for a kid to, ‘oh look at that’ and off they go,” explains Manning.

The booth will be open from noon to 7 p.m. every day at the Stampede.

However, volunteers can choose their hours.

If you would like to volunteer you can email Manning at mhsassociation@gmail.com. You can also reach her via messenger on The Medicine Hat Safe Community Association’s Facebook.
