MEDICINE HAT, AB – Premier Danielle Smith has issued a letter to the minister of affordability and utilities that includes several tasks to help reduce the cost of living for Albertans

The mandate letter Nathan Neudorf received from Smith, also the MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat, outlines the cost-saving expectations taxpayers can anticipate.

In the letter Smith asked the minister:

  • To review the province’s electricity pricing system to reduce the cost of transmission and distribution.
  • Explore a potential phase-out of the regulated rate option for electricity that would protect taxpayers from spikes in electricity and natural gas prices.
  • Work with relevant ministries to address cost of living concerns around housing, food and utilities
  • Work with stakeholders to provide recommendations to make home and auto insurance more affordable.
  • Develop an affordable home ownership and rental strategy.

Smith also tasks Neudorf to develop a comprehensive plan to achieve a carbon-neutral power grid by 2050.

It’s a pushback against the Federal Clean Energy Standard that aims to achieve a net-zero power grid by 2035.

Cypress-Medicine Hat MLA Justin Wright feels the Clean Energy Standard oversteps provincial legislation.

“This 2035 number is absurd. When we take a look we are taking steps to make sure we are being efficient and we recognize that the 2050 number is significantly more in line with what’s actually doable based upon today’s technology and standards,” says Wright.

Smith is also asking for a review of the operations and policies of the Alberta Utilities Commission and Alberta Electric System Operator.

She would like to align their operations with the province’s goal of an affordable power grid by 2050.
