Rotary Club of Medicine Hat officially dedicates Rotary Centennial Trail

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A trail that connects South Ridge Drive SE to the community of Desert Blume was officially dedicated as Royal Centennial Trail on Monday.

The project has officially been completed after five years of planning and working. The trail was dedicated as Rotary Centennial Trail after the Medicine Hat Rotary Club celebrated its centennial in 2018 when the project was first proposed.

Medicine Hat’s Rotary Club has served the community since 1918 being involved in numerous community events and projects over the decades.

Former president of Medicine Hat’s Rotary Club Melanie Harty says that the path was necessary in ensuring that people could walk safely and be a direct connect for those who live in Desert Blume to the city.

“The goal was to provide a safe path for people to walk. We had heard of many injuries that have happened, especially between Desert Blume and Medicine Hat. We wanted to provide them a place where they could run, jog, walk, and being able to enjoy that safely,” Harty said on Monday.

Potential plans that have been brought forward include building a walking path that connects Dunmore with Redcliff sometime in the near future. The plan would be to use the already existing paths on South Boundary Road to help connect the two communities.

Notable figures at Monday’s event included city council members Shila Sharps and Andy McGrogan, as well as representatives from the Cypress County Council.

The path runs for nearly 5 km.
