MEDICINE HAT, AB — Thunderstorms that hit the Medicine Hat area near supper time last night brought some downpours for parts of the city.

The area near the Moose Rec Centre on Division Avenue South was again overwhelmed as the storm sewers couldn’t handle the deluge and there was some brief flooding.

City fire crews assisted Cypress County firefighters after lightning struck a detached garage around 6 p.m. in Dunmore.

The structure suffered damage to the roof and eves, as well as water damage.

Cypress county crews also had to put out a grass fire that was started by lightning.

Approximately 10 acres were burned in an area north of Hilda near the gas plant in Empress around 3 in the afternoon.

Rain that fell as part of the storm helped snuff the flames as well.

There was a brief power outage in Redcliff after a power pole on 4th street northwest was struck by lightning at around 5:39 pm.

The city says it was on Dirkson feeder and the line had to be de-energize while repairs were completed.

The outage lasted for about 83 minutes and impacted 1210 customers.

The city says no other electrical infrastructure was affected by the storm.

The rain also caused the Maverick’s ball game with Weyburn to be postponed at Athletic Park.

11.2 mm of rain was recorded by Environment Canada at the airport as of midnight last night.
